IVC/IUSD Early College Program @ San Joaquin High School
Purpose:
The purpose of the Early College Program (ECP) is to provide the opportunity for academically qualified high school students to complete the Intersegmental General Education Course (IGETC) Certification and potentially an associate’s degree (additional units are needed outside of ECP to obtain an associate’s degree). The program is specifically designed to allow students who plan to attend a UC or CSU campus with almost two years worth of transferable college credit, saving thousands of dollars in tuition and valuable time that can be directed toward a career or graduate work. Classes offered through ECP are for college credit and carry the same rigor and content as the course offered on the IVC campus. All courses offered through ECP transfer to both the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC).
Program Highlights:
- Eligibility: Only current 8th-grade students are eligible to apply for this program, which begins in their freshman year of high school. Students can attend any high school within IUSD for their IUSD high school classes. Reserved spots of 8 students from each HS and if additional space will consider others.
- Commitment: Students must make a four-year commitment to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
- Flexibility: Most classes will be virtual or asynchronous, but occasional in-person attendance may be required for assessments and lab activities. IVC classes will be four days per week from 8-9:30am during the period 1 and period 2 time blocks at each high school. This will allow students to complete all other course work at their home school, whether that be a comprehensive site or San Joaquin.
- College-Level Rigor: Courses offered through ECP match the academic rigor and content of those on the IVC campus. These courses are for college credit and transfer to both the California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) systems. Some courses may include mature content. This is generally seen as something more accessible than AP courses and allows students a more balanced schedule.
- Achievable Goals: Students can complete the IGETC Certification through the program and may earn an associate’s degree with additional units beyond ECP.
